October 2023 Report – Temperature and Humidity in York

This is the new update of our hygrometer reports which we’re publishing which, using our own bespoke remote monitoring equipment, we track a full month of weather focusing on the relative humidity and temperature in York, this time covering October 2023.

We detail, analyse and contrast indoor and outdoor hygrometer readings throughout this turbulent autumnal month in which included both Storm Babet and the commencement of Storm Ciaran. We analyse highlights, averages, highs and lows seen across the month. This is a month where temperatures dropped noticeably (even getting close to freezing), with damp and mould problems becoming more prevalent.

Let’s start with the headline figures and a summary:

  • October 2023 was much colder in York, with average outdoor temperature at 11.8°C
  • This was more so later in the month, with average temps often in single figures
  • The maximum outdoor temperature in York was 20.4°C and the minimum was 1.9°C
  • This leads to an outdoor range (between the top and bottom) of 18.5°C
  • The average indoor temperature was higher at 18.5°C
  • The maximum indoor temperature in York was 21.0°C and the minimum was 16.6°C
  • This means an indoor range of just 4.1°C which is much narrower again

The graph above shows the full, breakdown of detailed readings across the whole month, from which the October 2023 highs, lows, range and averages were measured. It shows daily cycles of temperature variances with (as you would anticipate) highs during the day and lows during the night. As we covered earlier, from around the 11th October temperatures dropped.

On this chart, you can clearly see the outdoor temperature peak in York on 7th October in the late afternoon. Equally, the lowest temperature late in the month on the morning of 15th October.

You can see the indoor temperatures were on average noticeably higher, especially when the weather got cooler and that the trends of warmer and colder days in York generally follows for indoors and outdoors.

Here are the headlines from the humidity readings from York in October 2023:

  • October 2023 had an average outdoor relative humidity of 86.6%
  • This is significantly higher than September, as we get into colder months
  • The highest outdoor humidity in York was 99% and the minimum was 54%
  • This means an outdoor range (between the top and bottom) of 45%
  • As seen before, lower humidity happened when temperatures were higher
  • The average indoor relative humidity was lower at 65.6%
  • The maximum indoor humidity in York was 76% and the minimum was 57%
  • This gives an indoor range of just 19% which is less than outdoor

The graph above shows the granular data set from which October 2023 highs, lows, range and averages were calculated. The outdoor relative humidity is higher in general in part because temperatures are lower but equally because it is more exposed to rain, which can additionally increase humidity levels also.

This is especially the case when the inclement weather was wet during Storm Babet (20th to 21st October).

Above, we referenced the comparison between indoor vs outdoor temperature ranges in October 2023 and the graphs above help to demonstrate this. As you will see, the outdoor (top chart) readings were in a much wider range than the equivalent indoor (bottom chart) readings, this is to be expected in a controlled household indoor environment.

As you can see, the inside temperature readings taken from the hygrometer readings for October 2023 are very closely grouped with c.90% of the readings being at 18°C to 20°C (rounded to the nearest degree). In contrast, the outdoor readings are far more widely spread across a very wide range.

Temperature and Humidity by Time of Day – October 2023

The final set of informative data for October ’23 compares at how different times of day affect indoor and outdoor readings taken by the hygrometer data loggers. The four usual groups are:

  • Morning – 6am to Noon
  • Afternoon – Noon to 6pm
  • Evening – 6pm to Midnight
  • Night – Midnight to 6am

As you would likely expect, usually the afternoon was the warmer part of the day in York during October 2023 with the night and following morning being the coolest, with evening readings being fractionally warmer on average vs the morning. This was the inverse of relative humidity for the reasons mentioned earlier.

What was the temperature in York in October 2023?

There was a clear differential between temperatures in York for the first half of October 2023 when it was relatively warmer vs the colder second half of the month. The highest temperatures locally was 20.4 degrees Celsius with an average for the full month of 11.8 degrees. These readings were taken by our own local York weather monitoring station in the suburbs of York (not in the city centre).
